Welcome to Skedaddle!

Skedaddle is a growing collection of on-line material on the American Civil War, most of it originally published between 1860 and 1923.

The majority of the material is found in three parts of the site:

  1. The blogChronicles of the American Revolution —contained, as of the end of September, 2005, over 3000 posts.  The majority of these posts are news articles from the time of the civil war.  Each day, several new pieces are published on the blog—with many pieces pre-published, scheduled for posting in the future.  Many of the postings in the blog will be published in future issues of Skedaddle.
  2. Articles and other interesting materialsAmerican Civil War Anecdotes, Incidents, and Articlesdevoted to publishing 19th and early 20th century civil war material related to the impact of the war on the public and individuals in the service. Most documents in this part of the web-site are published as web pages and Adobe pdf documents.
  3. The e-journalSkedaddle, Volumes 1 and 2 —is available on-line in a printable Adobe pdf format.

Publication of future issues of Skedaddle is currently on hold until a future day, which has not yet been determined.

As well, the Skedaddle mailing list has been stopped.  Whether or not it will be restarted on resumption of publication will be determined at that time.

All previously published issues remain available:
  • The first volume of publication, published in 2004, has 4 issues and contained a variety of civil war related articles and other material.
  • The second volume shifted to news articles originally published prior to and during the war.  Volume 2 covers January through April of 1861 and has 20 issues.
  • Future volumes  will cover the remainder of the civil war.

Besides the above segments of Skedaddle, there is a large amount of previously published material in various directories on the site.  Much of this material can be found on the site map; however, it has not been maintained well and some of the material on the site may not be linked.  As well, some my civil war material that is on another server will be moved to pddoc.com.

Examples of material on the site:

Revisions coming to the site will improve the accessibility of material on the site.  All new pages will include a google search box, like the one at the top of this page,  with options for searching either the web or this site.  As well, each new page—and, eventually, all old pages—will have links to all parent pages (example: pddoc.com>skedaddle; where skedaddle is this page and its parent is pddoc.com).

Public Domain - Material is "harvested" from public domain sources, many of them on-line.  On-line sources are generally government or collegiate sites.

The content on this site is provided as a resource for others to use.  I encourage the use of individual items from the site and linking to pages of interest on our site.

Note: While almost all of the material is derived from the public domain, the collection is protected by United States and international copyright laws as a compilation.  While I encourage use of individual articles, poems, and images from the site, replicating the content of any significant portion of the site would be an infringement of the copyright on my compilation of material.

To minimize conflict, no material will be used from the web-sites of individuals without permission, even where the material is clearly in the public domain.  If permission is sought and not granted, another source for the material will be pursued or the material will not be used.
