Early in 1863, thirteen men and boys were executed after being taken prisoner by the Confederate Sixty-Fourth North Carolina Volunteer Infantry.  This incident , as well as other related barbarous acts, is described in our collection of documents indexed below.

    At the time of the incidents, Merrimon was NC Attorney General.  After the war, he became a North Carolina Superior Court Judge, served 6 years as a U.S. Senator and Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in Raleigh, N.C.
